| NVidia To Buy 3DFX |
The Patent & Video Graphics war between NVidia & 3DFX has been fought and as it seems NVidia has come out a winner with it's $112 million acquisition of all of 3DFX's chip technology. The deal has been approved by the boards of directors and will be final after consulting 3DFX's shareholders, FTC ruling and other legal red tape. NVidia expects the total purchase to be in the first quarter of 2002. Because of this 3DFX will layoff "substantially all" of its workforce early 2001. 3DFX was one of the first pioneers in creating 3D accelerators which made games like Quake instant hits and has been a driving force in the accelerated evolution of 3D graphics.
This leaves NVidia and ATI dominating the 3D market but as it seems ATI will have to come up with a "killer" card quickly to ever surpass NVidia's GeForce series! Maybe VIA will use it's acquired S3 technology to come up with anything or Matrox will do something but there are no current available plans.
